Patient,
a
45-year-old
man, is
in a
nursing
home. |
When he was 42, he
suffered carbon
monoxide poisoning
which handicapped
him, with multiple
cognitive deficits
affecting his
ability to speak and
have good mobile
functions. Due to
frontal lobe damage
and brain stem
involvement, patient
had severe shifts in
controlling his
emotions, having
violent outbursts at
times. Patient is
very dependent and
in a wheelchair.
Also, the traumatic
brain injury (TBI)
due to hypoxia
impaired the use of
his right hand with
some impairment in
his left hand.
Patient’s father now
takes a special
Cognitive Systems
configured laptop
computer daily when
he visits his son.
Began
Cognitive Systems
Internet
based Rehab Therapy
in January 2001.
-
Now uses both
hands in
conducting the
prescribed
activities, with
the right hand
almost equal to
the left hand for
performing visual
and auditory
exercises.
-
Extended his focus
and attention
capabilities from
20 minutes to 2+
hours, 5 days a
week.
-
Can speak in
sentences without
difficulty.
-
Neuropsychologist
stated that he has
seen progress in
Patient’s behavior
with positive
responses in his
scheduled
sessions. The
Neuropsychologist
also gave Patient
a
neuropsychological
battery of tests
to establish a
baseline, which
Patient was unable
to take before.
-
The head nurse has
stated that
patient still has
some outbursts but
much more
controlled;
however, now he
always apologizes.
-
With Patient’s
current rate of
improvement, he
has a promising
chance of living
independently
sometime next
year.
-
This case was
Cognitive Systems
first
out-of-state
placement,
connecting the
patient with a
therapist
approximately
1,700 miles away.
