19-year-old female who incurred a serious TBI from a car accident in November 1998.

 
  • Patient had been in rehabilitation in various locations and inpatient centers. She was released and was enrolled in the Special Ed. Program in high school in the fall of 1999.  Patient is in a wheelchair with her left side paralyzed.  She had a left field neglect in her vision.   Patient could speak but with limited vocabulary.  Her short-term memory is very limited and she can easily become angry and depressed.  She refused to read the one page experience stories that were developed in the Special Ed. Class, telling her mother that she was always too tired to read them, asking her mother to read them for her.
     

  • May 30, 2000, the Cognitive Systems System was installed in home.
     

  • June 8, 2000, in a group meeting at Jim Thorpe Rehab, the patient’s mother reported that patient had read a full-page story without any hesitation. The mother said that she felt that the System had given her hope and helped her to focus on the assignments.
     

  • A Jim Thorpe Rehab Center therapist (Speech Language Pathologist) assumed the management responsibility for patient, setting up a pilot case study.
     

  • Jim Thorpe Rehab personnel went to patient’s home and conducted the Neuro-psychology battery of tests to determine level of cognitive functioning.
     

  • July 24, 2000, patient’s mother talked with Cognitive Systems and stated that patient would be continuing with the System even after school starts in August. 
     

  • Patient attended High School and showed significant progress although she has a long way to go due to the severity of her brain trauma.  Patient is continuing to practice her cognitive thinking skills using the Cognitive Systems System in her home.
     

  • January 2001 discontinued therapy using Cognitive Systems system as patient is attending school 6 hours a day and participating in numerous social activities.
     

  • Family wants to continue Cognitive Systems Teletherapy System in May 2002 in preparation for college entrance in fall.
