69 year old mechanical and electrical engineer, stroke in 1998

After a heart operation which dislodged plaque going to the left side of the brain; 2 years in conventional rehab.  Right hemisphere affected, right field cut in vision, only gray tones without depth or dimension, right hand curled, could only shuffle, eat and dress himself with some assistance, could only speak 3-4 words without complete sentences, then seek words which would not make any sense; very depressed, no short term memory with limited long term memory.

  • Recommended to Cognitive Systems by Jim Thorpe Rehab Hospital in Oklahoma City

  • Installed Cognitive Systems System in home, Feb. 11, 2000

  • Practiced 2+ hours daily, 5 times a week at varying times

  • April 11, 2000, patient showed signs of cognitive improvement

  • Talked freely and easily on the telephone

  • Answered questions concerning the new assignments

  • Vision had cleared, now seeing brightness vs. gray tones

  • Remembered to tell wife that therapist had called

  • Right hand performing cognitive tasks as assigned by therapist.

  • May 1, 2000, patient now seeing color with depth and dimension.

  • Right hand almost equal in performance to left hand.

  • Right field cut improved by 45 degrees.

  • Recalled sequence as how to open the combinations to mountain cabin

  • Patient talking coherently and with meaningful purpose.

  •  May 25, 2000, patient and family took a 10-day vacation to mountain cabin.

  • June 6, 2000, patient returned and completed assigned cognitive tasks without any drop in cognitive improvement on the right side; the right hand, in fact, outperformed the left side.

  • June 25, 2000, patient and wife took another vacation to mountain cabin. No drop in performance. Right hand outperforming left hand.

  • July 21, 2000, patient expressed concern that he wasn’t progressing fast enough; however, when therapist asked him to reflect back to where he started on February 11, 2000, patient realized that he had progressed quite well.  Still he was dissatisfied, which the therapist pointed out was a positive reaction.

  • In September 2000, patient and his wife participated in a special 2-day Cognitive Systems therapists-training workshop.  Patient spoke to the 40 therapists, voc. rehab counselors and special education teachers in attendance.  After the presentation, patient felt more capable of speaking in public and attending church; the first time since his stroke more than 3 years ago.

  • Patient continued to progress using the Cognitive Systems System in his home.  His progress is reflected in the increased difficulty levels of the cognitive exercises, having progressed into the intermediate levels from the beginning levels.

  • Cognitive Systems 12-month program completed February 2001.
